What Types of Workflow Should I Automate
Next month, KMA is doing a seminar on workflow automation. In preparation for the seminar, I'm gathering some data on the types of business problems organizations are solving using Microsoft's new workflow tools--MOSS 2007, InfoPath 2007, Office Forms Server 2007 and Windows Workflow Foundation.
Microsoft's case studies are a good source of this information. Please note that all cost savings are self-reported estimates. Here is a brief sample of what I found:
- A mid-sized law firm automated the new project (matter) start-up process, reducing the time and effort required, and saving an estimated $2 million per year.
- A large healthcare provider automated the publishing of IT policies and procedures, reducing time for both policy creation and lookup with an estimated cost savings of $145,000 per year.
- A mid-sized industrial products distributor automated the new employee setup process, reducing time and effort, and saving $275,000 per year by making new employees productive faster.
- A large information services company automated the addition of new departments into its ERP system, reducing administrative effort by 25% and improving accuracy.
- A medical device manufacturer automated the process of leasing its devices through distributors, reducing the time to setup a new patient and to search for lease information, saving $375,000 per year.
- A medical research institute automated the new hire, expense reporting, and lab service request processes, saving time, improving accuracy and generating $50,000 in annual savings.
The overall focus is on frequently used internal processes with cost savings generated from improved productivity. I would encourage you to track down the references and attend our seminar to learn more.
