I attended and presented at a KM Forum seminar at Bentley University on Personal Knowledge Management last week. There were two excellent speakers--Doug Cornelius of Beacon Capital Partners and Patti Anklam of Net Works. In the post, I'll summarize my key learnings from Doug's talk.
Doug is a prolific blogger and tweeter. As Chief Compliance Officer in a real estate firm, he uses a wide variety of KM tools to both learn and share knowledge. Here are the slides from his talk:
My key takeaways from Doug's talk were:
- You can blog to learn as well as to share knowledge. Writing is a great way to learn. Doug reminded me of this. He got me to think of a great book I read on the subject--William Zinsser's Writing to Learn. Blog posts are an excellent vehicle to capture and synthesize key learnings. They have the side benefit of sharing your knowledge and building your network. Doug discussed how he used his blog to get up to speed in compliance.
- Blogging was just one of many KM social networking tools that Doug used. They include twitter, delicious, linkedin and slideshare. He lists them all in his presentation.
- He uses these tools as part of a personal KM strategy which helps him learn and to share knowledge to get knowledge.
- Doug spoke of two trade-offs that all social networkers must consider--balancing self-interest and altruism and balancing personal and business content.
Doug had some great points to consider if you're just getting started with personal knowledge management or if you're trying to refine your approach.
David -
